Ruikang Lane project represents an attempt of urban renewal in Shanghai. Through studying and summarizing the experience and shortcomings of Tianzifang and Xintiandi, the architect proposes updated “Ruikang Lane model” for urban renewal: giving due consideration to the micro renewal of urban spaces and features, maximally storing urban texture and memories.
In Ruikang Lane project, the architect holds that the re-vitalization of a block is first and foremost the re-vitalization of human activities and behaviors. Thus, the historical buildings and river landscapes scattered in the music valley area (where Ruikang Lane is located) are uniformly included into the scope of planning of the renewable proposal, and public spaces are extended and opened up to form the vein and core of the music valley. Meanwhile, the multiple adaptable functional spaces in the proposal can improve the compositionality of park functions, bring more vitality into the park and promote integration of creative park, residential community and commercial block.
In addition, Ruikang Lane model also emphasizes the renewal of urban spaces and townscapes. As the last waterfront lane and alley memory of old Shanghai, the narrow lane and alley are also worth preserving as the architecture itself. On that account, the plan of this project involves no large-area demolishing, and sets its limits to the reconstruction of lanes, the removal of accessory structures derived from mixed dwelling, repair of architectural surface and restoration of original architectural features, and classifies architectural renewal intensities on this basis to adapt to newly emerged functions. As for spaces intended to accommodate new urban activities, local demolishing is conducted to create the public attributes of these places.
