里直街位于上虞老城区,其所在的“老坝底”区域与漕运文化有着千丝万缕的关联,承载着老上虞人的集体记忆。随着上虞新城在城市北部的崛起,老城区面临着建筑破败、道路拥塞以及人口外流等问题,城市更新计划就此展开。历时三年光阴,里直街从一条传统的集镇街道转变为容纳现代商业、历史保护建筑展览、书院等功能的特色街道,作为“老城会客厅”焕发出新的活力。
约200m长的里直街承载着一段漫长而混杂的生活记忆,街巷两侧留有自清末民国至20世纪90年代叠加建造的低矮建筑,其中包括振华旅馆、大东轮船公司、大王庙和陈宗海道台四座文保建筑。
更新方案以留住场所记忆为第一原则。四座文保建筑被原样保留;同时,原街巷中电线杆、门窗、门牌、路灯及入户石板等建筑构件均被保留并加以再利用。在这些实体要素之外,重要的场所特征如场地的高差关系、街巷的曲折角度、院墙与街巷的空间关系等,也被融入更新设计方案之中。设计以改良工艺运用干粘石、水磨石等具有年代特征的建筑材料于建筑的墙面、踢脚线、窗套等部位,以期重现既有的材料记忆。
在旧肌理的底图之上,设计在街道界面梳理出适宜现代商业活动的公共空间。例如,一户民宅的花砖院墙被改造为退后的矮墙,以适应功能置换后商业街开敞空间的需要,但原围墙的石块基础并未被弃用,而是作为公共座椅的承托物,继续见证着街巷的熙来攘往。这类新旧并置的更新手法,在项目各处皆有体现。
Lizhi Street is situated in the old town of Shangyu, where the "Laobadi" weir area holds significant historical importance in canal transportation and preserves the collective memories of the local community. With the development of Shangyu New City in the north, the old town faces challenges such as population decline and regional decay. Therefore, a plan for urban renewal has been initiated to address these issues. Over three years, Lizhi Street has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a traditional market street into a modern block that accommodates retail, exhibitions of historic preservation, academies, and more. Regarded as the "parlor of the old city", Lizhi Street has been revitalized and infused with new vitality.
The approximately 200m long Lizhi Street becomes a vivid collage of memories. Both sides of the street are adorned with low rise buildings dating from the late Qing Dynasty to the 1990s. Among these structures are four cultural heritages: Zhenhua Hotel, Dadong Shipping Company, Dawang Temple, and Chen Zonghai Daotai's Residence.
The plan's guiding principle is the preservation of historical memory. Four cultural heritage relics are preserved unchanged. The old street's telegraph poles, doors, windows, doorplates, streetlights, and slates at building entrances have also been retained and repurposed. In addition to these tangible aspects, the design considers significant site characteristics, such as variations in elevation, the curvature of streets and alleys, and the spatial constraints imposed by courtyard walls. The materials utilized in the project employ modified process techniques. These materials, including dry-stack stone and terrazzo, have historical qualities and are used in the walls, baseboards, window frames, and other architectural elements, evoking the existing material memories.
Based on the existing fabric, The design has strategically guided and enhanced the street interface to provide public spaces that better foster modern commercial activities. For example, after functional modification, the former residential fence with floral-patterned bricks along the street has been repurposed as a setback parapet, providing additional space for the commercial streets. Yet, the original fence's stone base was reused as bench foundations. Similar integration of old and new reverberates throughout the project.
