大象设计致力于创造怎样的建筑? What sort of architecture is GOA dedicated to creating?

相较于其他艺术形式,建筑无疑最为坚固而耐久。因此,当我们谈及理想建筑时,会将它置于更大的时空中来探讨。一座建筑的诞生,不仅意味着一次人工建造的完成,同时也改变了它所处的空间,重新定义了那片场所的精神,这种影响会随着建筑的矗立而长久存在。我们对建筑设计的追求,也正是基于这一前提:设计,不只为我们所处的时代,而是寻求其超越时间的、长久的生命力,创造建筑真实的完整性。

这一创作过程有赖于设计者在空间和时间两个维度进行构建。对于大象设计而言,我们始终追求建筑本体与其环境的融合,注重建筑与环境之间的渗透和互动,以诗意的场所体验激发人们的情感共鸣。

与此同时,我们尊重地域文化的多元性和差异性,并以此为起点展开对当地文化内涵的追溯,从而获得超越时代和风格的表达,实现建筑在时间维度上的完整性。这也正是大象设计二十余年实践方向的概括。

Compared to other forms of art, architecture is undoubtedly the most solid and enduring. Consequently, when we speak of the ideal architectural industry, we explore it within a larger span of space and time. The birth of a building not only signifies the completion of a labor-intensive task, but it also entails the transformation and redefinition of the space in itself. Such an influence is erected along with the building and continues to coexist with it as long as it stands. Our pursuit of architectural design is based on the following premise: design is not only for the era in which it exists, it should also be concerned with finding an enduring vitality; creating integrity in architecture that stands the test of time.

This creative process relies on the designer’s dual-dimensional construction of space and time. For GOA, we emphasize the continual integration of architectural ontology and its environment. By paying specific attention to the emersion and interaction between architecture and environment, we seek to stimulate people's emotional resonance with a poetic experience.

At the same time, we respect the uniqueness and diversity of regional culture and use this as a starting point to trace local cultural connotations. Thus obtaining the ability of a sort of expression which transcends the times and given styles, while realizing the integrity of the building throughout an elongated span of time. This is also a summary of the practical direction of GOA for over 20 years.

大象设计所奉行的工作方式? What is the methodology behind GOA?

以倾听为基础。我们认为建筑不仅仅关乎建筑师的个人热情,在设计营造过程中需要整合大量社会资源,因而我们需要以一种审慎的态度来倾听真正的需求。这些声音来源于开发者、使用者以及社会公众。这种倾听并不意味着对每个具体要求的简单回应,而是深刻理解表达着内心真正的期待。

以合作为支撑。建筑设计作为一种现代组织,从来没有一个项目的成功是靠建筑师的一己之力而获得的,合作是能使其成功的唯一途径。建筑师需要与业主、合作顾问、施工单位甚至未来的使用者建立积极、紧密的合作关系。达成统一的目标并将其实现。

以“1:1理念”为实践准则。我们的建筑最终面向的是真正的使用者,建筑师在设计中所做的每一个选择,都将影响到他们身处其中的真实感受。因此我们总是对建筑的营造付出巨大努力,对于每个项目,我们都坚持在现场制作从样墙到样房的1:1模型推敲,这是大象设计高品质实现的保障。

Our methodology is based on listening. We believe that architecture is not only about the personal enthusiasm of architects, but also needs to integrate a large number of social resources in the design and construction process. Therefore, we need to listen to real needs with a prudent attitude. These requests come from developers, users, and the public. This kind of listening does not mean a simple response to each specific request, but a deep understanding of the real expectation of the heart.

To build cooperation as the support for the main textual research. Modern architectural design has never been successful by the architects efforts alone. Cooperation is the only way to make it successful. Architects need to establish active and close cooperation with owners, collaborative consultants, construction units and even future users, in order to define a unified goal and achieve it.

The construction of a “1:1 concept” as our practical criterion. Our architecture is ultimately geared to real users. Every choice architects make in their design will affect end users daily life, so we always make great efforts in design and construction. For every project, we insist on making a 1:1 ratio model on site from sample walls to sample rooms. This is how GOA guarantees the highest quality results.

The works designed by GOA present a high degree of overall completion. What is the support mechanism which insures such results?

这主要源于GOA不同的合伙人都是在一种共同的标准下进行创作、积累作品:为了能够更好地控制项目的整体品质,我们组建了一支涵盖城市设计、建筑、结构、机电、景观、室内及设计咨询的全专业团队,让我们得以在项目的营造中精准把控每一个环节,实现建筑的高品质落地。合伙人作为设计团队的核心,拥有项目经理、设计负责、技术负责三位主要助手,他们共同协作,从三个维度深入项目的设计和督造,进一步保障了项目所呈现的高完成度。

在建筑设计行业,设计话语权的获得并非易事,能够将自己的思想完全落实到设计中意味着这家设计企业在创意、技术、专业及作品等方面都已经获得认可,这样的公司即使在成熟的市场中也是少数。经过二十年不懈的坚持,今天的GOA大象设计可以说具备了这样的条件。

This is mainly due to the fact that different principals in GOA create and accumulate works under a shared, common standard. In order to better control the overall quality of our projects, we have assembled a full team capable of urban planning, architectural, structural and electromechanical aspects, landscape and interior design as well as design consulting that allow us to accurately manage every step in a high-quality construction project. As the core of the design team, we have three main roles: project manager, design manager, and technical manager. They work together to lead the design team and supervise projects from three unique areas, thus further ensuring a high degree of completion of projects.

In the architectural industry, getting a say in the design discourse is not easy. To be able to fully realize your design ideas means that your design enterprise has been recognized in terms of creativity, technology, professionalism and works. There are only a few established companies of such caliber on the market. After 20 years of unremitting persistence, today's GOA can be said to have such credentials.

GOA大象设计的作品有特定的风格或类型吗? Does GOA’s work have a specific style or type?

我们的项目种类和数量非常多,而且每年都在增加。作为一家商业化运作的公司, 商业地产项目是我们的主要业务类型,仅就设计创作而言,地产开发中速度、规模、成本的压力会对我们产生约束,也使市场上的产品趋于同质化。这也是现阶段我们需要直面的挑战。

面对这些挑战,我们始终致力于研究用户需求和新产品的研发,这并不是来自业主和市场的要求,而是基于我们“关注城市及使用者感受”的设计价值观。随着我们设计机构自身的发展和房地产市场的成熟,这份坚持的价值渐渐显现出来——我们的作品类型没有过多受到市场的局限,而是在城市综合体、市政公建、特色小镇、城市更新、度假酒店、教育、养老、商业住宅等各个类别中都有积累,并且陆续收获了国内外同行的认可。我们希望能够用设计为城市创造更多价值,也希望通过项目的合作,去传达我们所认同的价值观,甚至影响更多的业主来思考和探索这些问题。

和许多创意企业一样,新鲜和与众不同的东西总是令人兴奋。GOA作品的类型和地点的多样性同样符合在这里工作的人的愿望。作为大象设计的建筑师,我们有机会在不同的地域工作,与不同的专家团队合作,为城市创造出更多不同类型的建筑。

The variety and number of our projects are very large and is increasing every year. As a commercial company, real estate projects are our main business type. In terms of design, the pressure of speed, scale, and cost in real estate development constrains us and make the products we design for the market to be very similar. This is one of the main challenges we face at this stage.

In the face of these challenges, we are always committed to researching user needs and the R&D of new products. This is not based on the requirements of the owners and the market, but based on our design values of “focusing on the city and user experience”. With the development of our design institutions and the maturity of the real estate market, the value of this persistence gradually emerges. Our work types are not limited by the market, we also design urban complexes, municipal public buildings, and characteristic towns, urban renewal, hotels, education, pensions, and commercial housing. We have gradually gained recognition from domestic and foreign counterparts alike. We hope to use design to create more value for the city. We also hope that through cooperation and collaboration on projects, we will convey the values we recognize and even influence more owners to think about and explore these issues.

Like many creative companies, fresh and distinctive things are always exciting. The diversity of the types and locations of GOA works is also in line with the wishes of those working here. Architects at GOA have the opportunity to work in different regions and work with different expert teams to create more unique types of buildings for the city.

GOA对自身成长和对未来的发展有怎样的期待? What are the expectations of GOA for its own growth and future development?

我们希望能够通过设计真正影响城市,推动城市建设的发展。

从职业角度来讲,我们希望通过“合伙人制度”的设置,让“Group of Architects”发挥其真正的力量和价值,通过一支专业的建筑师团队,为设计机构注入持久和旺盛的创造力,能让设计机构的生命不断延续,甚至比创始人更长久。

从行业角度来讲,目前国内的行业现状仍很难支持以建筑师为主导的设计机制,每当我们以专业标准深入地把控项目全过程,总会遇到许多困难,相比之下国外的建筑师负责制已经比较完善。作为中国建筑行业的一员,我们希望能够以专业的知识和开阔的视野,在各个环节中起到积极的主导作用,推动行业发展,期待在国内“自由的设计”也能够真正实现。

另一方面,我们也希望能够为建筑师搭建一个专业、开放、全面的平台,让每一位在这里工作的建筑师充分展现其能力,为整个行业、城市以及社会创造更多的价值。

We hope that we can really influence the city through design and promote the development of urban construction.

From a professional point of view, we hope that through the “partnership system” and through “Group of Architects” we can exert our true strength and value, and inject lasting and exuberant creativity into the design organization through a professional team of architects. It will allow the life of the design agency to continue, even long after its founders are gone.

From an industry perspective, the current domestic industry situation is still difficult to support the architect-led design mechanism. Whenever we thoroughly control the whole process of a project with professional standards, we will always encounter many difficulties, compared with foreign countries. The system which honors architects with further responsibilities is relatively complete. As a member of the Chinese construction industry, we hope to be able to play an active leading role in all aspects with professional knowledge and broad vision and promote the development of the industry. We hope that "free design" in China can also be realized.

On the other hand, we also hope to build a professional, open and comprehensive platform for architects, so that every architect working here can fully demonstrate its ability to create more value for the entire industry, city, and society.

中国鲜少有具有一定规模的真正的合伙人制度的公司,
GOA的合伙人制度究竟为何?
It's rare that actual large principal based companies in China exist, so what are the principles behind GOA’s principal-based system?

合伙人制度的本质在于集结更广泛的力量去搭建专业化的平台,这对于创作品质来说意义显著。单名建筑师能够深入管理的团队规模大约在二十人左右,合伙人制度将多个优秀团队集结起来,从而具有更强的项目执行能力,确保大规模项目始终能在有效的管控下进行,这是独立团队无法比拟的。同时,合伙建筑师也能因而获得积累,不断拓展实践边界。在合伙人制度下,每一位设计师都在为一个共同的创作理念经营,而非为某个个人工作。

合伙人制度在西方非常常见,但国内的企业却鲜少具有西方意义上的合伙人制度,且能够将规模做大。从1998年到现在,我们公司能够保持这样持续的发展,最重要的是因为我们聚集了一批真正优秀的建筑师,他们始终持有共同的观点和态度,在设计的道路上不忘初心,持续发挥自己的才能。也正是合伙人制度,让机构的价值得以体现,并最大化地发挥其作用,为城市创造更多美好,为社会贡献更多意义和价值。

The true purpose of a principal-based system is to congregate capabilities together under a professional work platform which will in turn positively impacts the quality of work significantly. Each principal is able to manage a team of around 20 persons. A principal-based system will not only bring good teams together but also boost team execution capability to guarantee that big projects will always proceed under effective management. Therefore, by no means is this comparable to an individual team. In the meanwhile, each principal is gaining more experience to extend the limit of practice. In the principal-based system, every single designer is dedicated to establishing the common ground, and not just work for someone.

The principal-based system is very common in western countries but very rare in China especially in large companies. Since 1988, our company has sustained developed, this can be chiefly attributed to the fact that we have brought many outstanding architects together who always stand on common ground, stay true and motivated to their initial aspiration for design. Also, the principal-based system has realized the value of the institution, in the sense of making more contributions to the city and society.

How do GOA principals cooperate and how do they manage the company?

GOA在二十年发展中摸索出了“合伙人团队+运营平台”的双轨管理机制,公司日常事务交由运营平台来统筹管理,以此为设计合伙人营造最佳的创作环境。涉及企业战略方向的重要决策,会由全体合伙人投票表决。

设计师之间知识和技能的转移是非常重要的,这为公司的工作提供了一个强有力的方向。由不同的人设计的建筑汇集在一起,形成一个体现共同价值的整体。在我们的合伙人团队中,我们或许可以发现许多不同的设计趋势,但这些建筑具有基本的态度,并实现了某些一致的品质。

GOA has developed the “ principal group+ operation group” dual-management system. The operation group manages the daily affairs of the company in order to provide a creative environment for the design principals, pivotal decisions are made by the principals only by voting.

The capacity of turning knowledge into skills is very important, this provides a strong direction for the work of the company. Architecture that is designed by different principals is integrated into a common value system. We can perceive different design intentions in our architecture, however, the fundamental value is to realize quality.

多年来,我们聚集到的,以及一直在寻找的建筑师团队,应当坚持对设计创意及建造实现的追求,并将这一坚持一以贯之地应用到实践当中;我们希望建筑师在工作中能够以开放的思维模式共同合作,发挥个人的能力和经验,为团队创造附加值;同时,优秀的建筑师还应始终保有积极的价值观,关注城市及社会,实现用设计为城市创造更多美好。

Over the years, we have assembled and continue to search for the perfect team of architects. This group should remain committed to design, creativity and the pursuit of construction. We hope that our architects can work together in an open mindset and leverage their personal abilities and experience to create added value for the team. At the same time, excellent architects should always maintain positive values, pay attention to the city and society, and realize the use of design to create a more beautiful city.

你们如何发掘优秀的青年建筑师? How do you discover outstanding young architects?

高校及同行之间的推荐是一条不错的途径;另外,我们也通过校企互动、学术讲座等一系列教育活动,积极参与到行业和教学中去,给学生以更多的机会,为学生提供一个深入了解行业、接触社会、践行理想的平台,并在这一过程中发现和挖掘优秀的青年建筑师。

例如,我们每年都会组织暑期实习工作营,推出“GOA大象设计开放日”系列活动,携手各大知名高校搭建更好的校企设计交流平台;而秋季的校园招聘更是我们深入高校互动的重要方式之一,多位合伙人亲自前往校招现场,解答同学们在专业领域及对建筑行业的疑问,为在校学生提供深入了解建筑实践的契机;持续了三届的“引力场”系列活动,更是GOA大象设计作为一家建筑设计公司,关注城市、履行社会责任的实践活动,我们的合伙人带领高校学生,组成建筑实践小组,为城市公共空间度身打造建筑装置作品,以微更新的方式激发城市的活力和创造力,也正是通过这样的教学活动,学生们得以真正了解到建筑从设计到落成所面临和需要解决的一系列问题,能够让这些优秀的年轻人在入行前得到更充分的实践、锻炼的机会,从而,也给了我们发掘优秀建筑师的契机。

One good method to find talent is through recommendations from universities and peers. In addition, we also actively participate in events and programs that link schools and enterprises, for example, academic lectures and other educational activities. Bridging the gap between industry and education gives students more opportunities, provides students with a deep understanding of the industry, allows greater contact with society, and gives them a chance to practice ideals. Through these processes, we discover outstanding young architects.

Furthermore, we organize summer internship camps every year. In particular, we have launched a design day called the“GOA Open Day ”during which we host a series of activities, and work together with famous universities to build a better school-enterprise design exchange platform. Campus recruitment in the fall is one of the important ways for us to deepen university interaction. Many of our associates personally go to universities to answer the students' questions about the professional field of construction and architecture. This provides students with an opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of architectural practices. GOA also hosts a three-stage “Gravitational Field” workshop. Moreover, GOA is an architectural design company that focuses on the implementation of social responsibility practices in cities. Our principals lead college students to form an architectural practice group to create tailor-made architectural installations for urban public spaces, inspiring the city's vitality and creativity through urban micro-renewal. It is also through this kind of teaching activity that students are able to truly understand the range of problems that architects face and need to solve from design to completion of a project. This enables aspiring architects to get more opportunities to practice and exercise their skills before they enter the market, meanwhile giving us an opportunity to discover outstanding architects.

For young architects who have just entered the field, how can you help them grow into excellent, mature professional architects?

GOA大象设计为青年建筑师设立了“未来合伙人计划”,我们提供有规划、有节奏的职业成长道路,形成快速成长的平台和全面发展的空间,支持建筑师个人能力的多向发展,以主动选择不同的职业发展道路。

我们强大的运营平台提供给员工专业上的支持和无微不至的生活保障,为他们创造心无旁骛的工作环境,通过高质量的生活给予员工更多的人文关照;同时,我们鼓励建筑师之间的交流与互动,为员工提供诸如讲座、参观、lunch talk等一系列的专业培训活动,员工也因此获得了共同的记忆和愿望。

GOA has established a “Future Principal Program” for young architects. Through this program, we provide a planned and proven career growth path. This fast-growing platform provides a comprehensive development space to support the multi-directional development of architects' individual abilities. This program allows individuals to take the initiative to choose different career development paths.

Our formidable operating platform provides staff with professional support and meticulous security in order to create a stable work environment without distraction. We aim to treat employees with respect and provide a high quality of life. At the same time, we encourage exchanges and interactions between architects, providing employees with a series of professional training activities such as lectures, visits, and lunch talks. These memorable professional training activities inspire a desire to grow in our employees.

On the other hand, we have a very harmonious intergenerational relationship at work. The founders who founded the company 20 years ago are still here. They are as full of inspiration and enthusiasm for today's work as the first day. But at the same time, the company is being galvanized by young talents, and working together over time will allow us to form a common set of values and ideas.
