Hangzhou Tao Yuan Town is located at Xianlin Town, Yuhang District, Hangzhou City, which is about 19 kilometers away from the downtown of Hangzhou. It is the most representative local paradigm of large-sized residential communities.

Its vision is to create a system of appropriately proportioned spaces that can facilitate communications and interactions among neighborsin such a large-sized community. Based on that, the architects create a series of scenarios for public life and thus provide users interesting spatial experiences that feature both tranquility and vitality. In an endeavor to provide its residents with open, natural and quiet spaces tucked in a bustling urban area, the architects effectively improves the utilization rate of landscapes and create a harmonious and pleasant “home”.、

Overall, residential clusters within the community are joined by a circular path that ensures the relative independence and interrelation among different clusters. On the basis of a full consideration of the elevation of the site as well as design requirements concerning earthwork, sunlight, planning, transportation, and the environment, the site is divided into five clusters, which consist of different residential product types, including Chinese-style courtyard residences, French-style stacking villas, stacking villas in the architectural style of the Republic of China, terraced houses in the architectural style of the Republic of China, to meet the needs of different customer groups. The five clusters encircle the green axis of public landscapes that link the south to the north. Based on the particular geographical conditions, the landscape planning makes full use of the original attributes of the surroundings, and effectively fuses them with the residential spaces. Furthermore, through a careful arrangement and design based on the elevation of the site, a profusion of scenic and recreational spaces of appropriately arranged heights and sizes are created. 

The design of house types highlights the concept of people orientation and a clear division of quiet and active spaces. With the aim to meet user needs throughout the full service life, the design allows users the freedom to renovate and recombine spaces to some extent. It takes user habits into full consideration and presents dwellings that can continuously ensure high degrees of user satisfaction.
