The international competition project for the commercial planning and design scheme of Hangzhou Shisanwan Alleys urban renewal has recently been announced as the winning bid. Located in the core area of Hangzhou’s old city, the project plays a significant demonstrative and driving role in the surrounding and broader regions. As the first stop of the urban renewal plan, it aims to start from the area with the deepest cultural heritage in Hangzhou, stimulate new vitality in the old city, and create a sustainably developing new block.

In the initial stage of the project, the team proposed the "Chenglixiang · Green Transportation Plan," encouraging green travel within a "one-li" (about 500 meters) radius and inviting visitors to participate in co-building the "Green Transportation Plan." In terms of design, the ground floor has undergone a series of renovations to release high-quality commercial and cultural spaces, forming squares, street corridors, and courtyards. Additional open vertical transportation structures and a three-dimensional corridor bridge system have been built to connect various buildings, naturally extending public activities to the rooftop block and constructing a complete three-dimensional pedestrian roaming loop.

The team conducted detailed research and evaluation on existing buildings and proposed four levels of renovation plans to ensure that old buildings can safely adapt to new functions. Under the new concept of operational logic, the indoor stadium of the school has been transformed into the iconic "Sky Stadium," and the former auditorium of the government building has been converted into an open and diverse theater complex, becoming an urban living room for cultural life and daily social interactions.

The facade design focuses on preserving and restoring the scale and density of the old city, continuing the small-scale, high-density urban texture of Hangzhou’s old town. Through volume decomposition and abstract construction, the design utilizes materials and color elements to express the architectural charm and cultural impression of Hangzhou, respond to the design challenges of the architectural style in the old urban area, and depict a long scroll of contemporary Hangzhou’s new urban life.
