Zhoushan Greentown Yuhua International School is situated on a newly-built beautiful island called Changzhi Island. Covering a land area of about 120000m², the site faces the sea with green mountains as background, enjoying beautiful scenery. The school covering a total building area of 82,530 m² consists of 36 primary school classes, 12 junior middle school classes and 12 senior middle school classes, with a total of about 1,800 students.

The layout of the project drew inspiration from a traditional academy of classical learning. With modern teaching functions, it is transformed into a modern school that consists of five major functions: etiquette, teaching, sports, recreation and living. As the core of the school, the etiquette space starts with the square in front of the school, passes through the entire campus along the mountain-sea direction, linking up a series of important spatial nodes in the teaching area, and ends with the Chinese-style garden and the Chinese Classics Hall seated at the north end of the garden. The daily teaching function is distributed along both sides of the etiquette space, and divided into two independent units: primary school unit and middle school unit. The comprehensive teaching area and recreation & living area follow a Chinese-style courtyard layout at the end of the etiquette space. In this way, the courtyard with landscape becomes an important place for after-school life and communication and also a core memory of the school for students. The large-scale sports field is located beyond the building cluster, with the intention of weakening the spatial fall between the small-scale courtyard pattern and the large-scale sports field. All buildings are linked up by galleries, and the intertwining of courtyards and galleries offers rich spatial experiences.

The architectural style of the school combines the elegant and solemn “neo-Chinese style” and the traditional Chinese style. Its structure is well-defined with clear orientation, notwithstanding the richly-layered overall space owing to the presence of the axial etiquette space and the courtyard. After completion, the elegant and demure building cluster will perfectly merge with the surroundings to reproduce the unique temperament of a Chinese-style academy.
