Located in a riverside old city renovation area in Lucheng District of Wenzhou, The Buddha Blessing Temple occupies a total area of less than 800m², with an irregular shuttle-shaped contour, making it impossible to accommodate the architectural pattern of traditional temples. Thus, the starting point of the project lies in finding an effective spatial organization mode to realize the solemn atmosphere that goes with religious architectures.

The architect selects the most upright and foursquare area in the center of the site, arranges the temple gate and the preaching hall on the first layer, designs a unique open-air courtyard and hall on the second layer, and builds high enclosure walls to block the disorderly scenes and traffic noises from the city and make it feel like a bright mirror against sky. In the tranquil courtyard, the skylight and clouds seem to slow down the flow of time, and make visitors feel calm; looking from the bright courtyard into the deep main temple hall, the temple feels to be more solemn and respectful.

The triangular blocks on both sides of architecture accommodate the auxiliary functions, and create a sequence with the main space via the courtyard.

The architect adopts simple and powerful geometric forms. The transverse stone louvers on the first layer are comparable to the architectural base in façade proportion, and solve the lighting problem of this layer. The top of the architecture adopts the design of combining glass and golden aluminum section gratings to implicitly assimilate the roof crown of traditional temples. The proper lotus decorations suggest the Buddhist theme.

Temples are places where people reflect on themselves, and their designs represent an understanding and reflection of the life and demands of people living in the era. The concise design language of The Buddha Blessing Temple shapes a modern and serene spiritual space, and represents a positive and successful attempt.
