Nanhai Experimental School Changzhi Campus is located in the east of Changzhi Island, Lincheng New District of Zhoushan, with a floor area of 5.3ha. The site with a flat terrain enjoys a superior natural environment, and is adjacent to town center, the primary public building cluster on the island.

The project assembles all the classes from primary school to junior middle school to meet the diversified living and learning demands of students at different ages. Its design seeks to maximize spatial openness, functional compositeness and place flexibility.

Given that the client attached great importance to the level of sports facilities and wished to build a standard 400m football field, the building lot was in relative shortage, so the compact and efficient courtyard layout becomes the optimal choice. The main building in neutral position looks out to water in the south. The main entrance square, entrance courtyard and central landscape courtyard jointly form a central axis that links up the main public living spaces of the campus. The central axis is flanked by primary school courtyard and junior middle school courtyard to share campus spaces without interfering with each other. The central landscape courtyard enclosed by lecture hall, gymnasium, library and administrative building is the primary space for public teaching, and reserves the most dynamic interactive space for children. At the outset, the project compared multiple rounds of solutions for the separation of pedestrians and vehicles, and finally realized the reasonable efficient organization of closed-off management, pick-up and later-stage service.

As for façade design, distinctive far-reaching cornices, extended building shapes and lively coatings with a strong sense of texture are combined with dark metal paints to endow the architecture with a strong new Asian style.
