Since its architectural scheme was first unveiled, Cityscape The Catania Xuhui, jointly created by GOA and Cityscape Development, has consistently drawn industry-wide attention. Situated in a central Shanghai location, the project occupies a rare residential parcel with low-to-medium plot ratio. Confronted with the complex challenges of urban-core high-end residential renewal, GOA went beyond conventional luxury product configurations. Through comprehensive spatial analysis across architectural, community, and urban dimensions, the team explored a new paradigm for low-density residential developments in urban centers. As the demonstration area comes to life, the vision of a "new species of urban-core villa living" is transformed into a tangible, sensory spatial experience.

The site is located in the Longhua area of Xuhui District, a neighborhood rich in historical depth, vibrant urban life, and artistic character. Facing a dense, high-value urban fabric, the design reorganizes the relationship between the city and the community through a clear planning strategy: the residential massing steps back to create an approximately 120-meter-long active street interface. Rather than asserting a closed boundary to satisfy private residential demands, it establishes a soft, public-facing open edge. What the demonstration area presents is the first tangible slice of GOA’s “Vibrant Community” philosophy: entrances, lobbies, retail spaces, and streetscape elements are linked and porous, forming a warm, inviting transition between the city and the neighborhood.

In its architectural language, GOA draws on Xuhui’s identity as an artistic destination, translating the abstract fluidity of music into a bespoke facade system that honors an "artisan" ethos. Inspired by the tectonic logic of classical instrument making, the rhythmic curves of lutherie are reinterpreted into facade lines, with subtle radii and proportions fine-tuned through precise scale adjustments. Like master craftsmen, the architects carefully weighed material treatments based on their inherent physical qualities: cool-gray chiseled stone creates a grounded, solid presence, contrasting with and balancing lightweight, warm-toned metal louvers to compose a nuanced and recognizable elevation.
